Pending approval from the Board of Education, Panthers is set to become Pascack Valley’s new mascot, with Broncos to be Pascack Hills’ new mascot.
But just how common are these school mascot names?
Panthers is one of the top 15 most popular mascot names. In total, there are 862 high schools in the U.S. with Panthers as their active mascot – 19 of which are in New Jersey and three (Glen Rock, Midland Park, Wallington) in Bergen County. 50 U.S. colleges utilize Panthers as their mascot as well.
As for the Broncos, there are 83 high schools in the U.S. with Broncos as their active mascot to go along with 10 colleges, according to the mascot database generator. Hills is set to become NJ’s first school represented by the Broncos mascot.

As an alumni of Pascack Valley I completely back the changing of the names of the mascots. Pascack Hills did a wonderful job with Broncos and the image of it. Pascack Valley on the other hand is completely a disappointment with the name and caricature which unfortunately looks like it was drawn as an afterthought. What has Panthers has to do with anything except it is used alot?????? After all this time and people involved, no one could come up with something more tied in to the surrounding area? What has Panthers have to do with this area – they could have used frogs or tadpoles , ants or bees, because there is absolutely no connection to the surrounding area.
