2022 Boys Tennis preview

Connor Shirey is a key returner for the boys’ 2022 tennis season. The team looks to build off the experience of the singles players.

Coach: Ken DelSanto (8th season as head coach)

Last year’s record: 11-9

Key Returners: Alex Rothenberg (Jr.), Ethan Ganz (Jr.), and Connor Shirey (Sr.)

Key Losses: Ben Kahl and Vasili Karalewich

Strengths of the teams: “When it comes to tennis, experience is very important, so our singles guys having that experience is definitely going to be a strength,” DelSanto said. “The first couple days of tryouts we’ve seen and been impressed with some of the guys who’ve been filling those double shoes, so I’m excited to see how they pan out.”

Weakness of team: “The only weakness might be that our doubles guys are going to be filling the shoes [of graduated players]. The [doubles players] kind of played a little bit last year, but now I think they’re stepping into bigger roles. So you know, we’re excited to see their development,” DelSanto said.

Outlook on the season: “We would hope to get back to where we were last year. We made the state tournament last year and we had some success there,” DelSanto said. “Our goal would be to repeat that again and maybe even go deeper into the states.”

Coach’s Comment: “[A player] can shine in singles tennis and then when you get put into doubles tennis, it’s a little bit of a different game,” DelSanto said. “[They] had to change their game a little bit, and they’re focusing on different tactics than they would if they’re a singles player. So that’s an unusual transition between the two that we’ll have to overcome.”
