“Anyone But You” has to be the best movie of 2024. Yes, it is only January, but this movie was seriously such a showstopper.
I found myself laughing at every scene and loving the entire movie. I loved this movie so much that I had to go see it a second and a third time. If that doesn’t prove my enjoyment of “Anyone But You,” I don’t know what will.
The movie starts as a typical rom-com (romantic comedy). The girl meets the guy at a coffee shop, and they hit it off. The two spend the entire day and night together.
Despite the typical and cliche start, the movie doesn’t feel like a typical romantic comedy. While it did have a Shakespearean-based romantic plot, it feels more like an action-packed movie.
Based on what I have seen across TikTok and Instagram, the movie seems to appeal to primarily teenagers, but the play that “Anyone But You” is based on might encourage a broader audience to see it. This movie loosely follows the storyline of the play “Much Ado About Nothing” by William Shakespeare. “Anyone But You” uses some of the names that Shakespeare used in the play such as Margaret, Beatrice, Claudio (changed to Claudia in “Anyone But You”), and Benedick (Ben).
The overarching theme of “Much Ado About Nothing” is that the couple’s problems could have been solved by communication, and this theme is prevalent throughout “Anyone But You.”
Anyone But You has been called “the next ‘How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days,’” according to The Red Ledger.
"Some people say the new movie 'Anyone but you' starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell is the next best rom com in this decade." The Red Ledger
Also, the movie grossed $100.2M, which is the highest-grossing rom-com since “Baby” was released in 2016.
“Anyone But You” has also been nominated for multiple awards, including the People’s Choice Award Comedy Movie of the Year, Comedy Movie Star of the Year, and Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media nomination for Outstanding Film – Wide Release.
The movie also became popular because of the song “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield, which is a song played multiple times in the movie. Since the movie’s release, the song has gone viral on TikTok with tons of people raving about the movie and encouraging even more viewers to go to theaters and see “Anyone But You.”
