Curstine Guevarra

This week’s athlete of the week, January 25-29, Eric Zicarelli.

Week: January 24-29

Sport: Basketball

Grade: Senior

Position: Forward

The lowdown: The box score does not tell the whole story when it comes to Ziccarelli. He is the unsung hero of the team on the defensive end, making the plays and putting in the effort that can’t be seen by looking at a stat sheet. His leadership has brought the Indians to a hot start to the season. With Ziccarelli’s help, Pascack Valley was able to play a competitive game with a tough Hackensack team in a close 84-78 loss. He also contributed to a 64-62 win against Northern Highlands during the week, which helped PV clinch a spot in the Bergen County Jamboree.

Coach’s comment: “Eric is the epitome of what a team basketball player is. He is selfless, hard working, and respected by all his peers. He is truly a great teammate,” said Al Coleman.

What he likes most about basketball: “The best part about basketball is the teammate aspect of the game. Especially, when we have been playing with the same exact team for two years, you get to build a really strong bond with everyone around you, all with the determination to win games.”

Favorite basketball player: Steph Curry

Favorite teacher: Miss Marchiano, English. “She refers to herself as my ‘school mom’ and is also a basketball star herself, so we get along very well.”

Four people he’d invite to a dinner party: Odell Beckham Jr. (wide receiver for the Giants), Will Ferrell (Actor/comedian), Mark Wahlberg (Actor), and his mother (An excellent cook)

College plans: “I’m not sure where I plan on going to college next year, but I do want to study business wherever I eventually choose.”

Future in basketball: “I’m still waiting on Kentucky to finally offer me that D1 basketball scholarship to start for them next year.”
