Athlete of the Week: Matt Urrea

David Harnett

This week’s athlete of the week, October 17-21, Matt Urrea.

Name: Matt Urrea

Sport: Football

Grade: Senior

Position: Running Back

The lowdown: Urrea had an otherworldly performance of seven total touchdowns and 412 total yards in the game on October 14th against Northern Valley Demarest. Six touchdowns and 312 yards were on the ground while one score and 100 yards came through the air. His huge night gave Valley their first win of the season. Demarest was 4-1 coming into the night and therefore moved to 4-2 thanks to the starting running back’s 46 points (including the PATs that he kicked) . Those seven touchdowns that game was the same amount that he had the entire season beforehand.

What this Win Meant to Him: “Well whenever you’re 0-5 you want to win really, really badly but just because of the back and forth atmosphere in the game.”

When Asked About his Performance: He referred back to his play that he didn’t quite like, “In the first half I didn’t play very well. I hurt my knee a little bit, it was bothering me, I threw that interception. So in the second half I just wanted to erase the mistakes I made.” Urrea then gave credit to his offensive line. “Our offensive line did a very, very nice job. I had two or three touchdown runs where I wasn’t even touched.”

Coach’s Comment: “Matty is one of the best players in Bergen County and the state of New Jersey. Matt is just…one of the most unselfish individuals you can ever meet. Matt does everything and anything you ask of him. You know, he’s been a running back, quarterback, nose guard, linebacker, kicker, punter, PAT kicker, placekicker….Matt’s just your all around football player. We’re just very fortunate to have Matt Urrea on our football team.”

Urrea’s Comment on his Coach: “He’s very organized and there’s a certain attitude about him. He’s a very big guy and just wants to crush everyone and that’s the kind of attitude that we play with. We just want to run the ball hard and just shove it down people’s throats.”

Favorite Memories of PV: Football State Sectional Championships his freshman and sophomore year and Valley Cups.

Favorite Teacher(s): Ricca. “I have a lot of favorite teachers I don’t really want to single anyone out.”

What Football Has Meant to Him: Urrea claims that he has learned more on the field than he has in the classroom about himself, being a leader, and a lot of other important aspects. “Just part of being a teammate and whatnot can teach you a lot about who you are.”

Favorite Type of Music: 80s Rock.

Future Plans: Doesn’t quite see himself playing football in college. His priority is to go to a academically good school, any school that specializes in mechanical engineering.
