Position: Second Singles

The Lowdown: Individually, Oh went undefeated in the Comet Invitational Tournament last weekend, and the team as a whole finished in second place. Oh defeated opponents from Waldwick, Paramus, and Hackensack. He also won his match against Teaneck by a score of 6-0, 6-4 on April 9. He won his match against Indian Hills by a score of 6-2, 7-5 on April 8.

How he’s managed moving multiple times: “I moved to Jersey from Texas freshman year,” Oh said. “It was kind of challenging to meet new people because it was such a different environment, because Valley is so unique compared to other schools.”

Commuting from Palisades Park: Unlike most PV students who live in Hillsdale or River Vale, Oh commutes from Palisades Park, which is much farther. “The commute differs every day,” he said. “There is almost always an accident on Route 17, so sometimes I am 5-6 minutes late to school. I always have to wake up around 6:30 to get to school on time.”

Coach’s Comment: “Being the only senior to play varsity, he has taken a leadership role,” PV coach Ken DelSanto said. “He’s improved his serve a lot, he’s getting more consistent. He moved up to second singles [and] improved on his forehand. Over the tournament he went 3-0, which really helped us. He’s been very charismatic, very positive attitude, helping the younger kids.”

What He Likes Most About His Sport: “I like that it is an individual sport because when you lose the only person you can blame is yourself,” Oh said. 

Best Sport Memory:

Proudest Moment on the Court: When Oh was in middle school, his team went undefeated and placed first in their district.

Funniest Moment: In a doubles match against Northern Valley Demarest during his junior year, Oh managed to hit his partner, Joey Corrado, with the ball.

His Role In The Chemistry Olympics: ”I personally did the web design event where we get a topic assigned to us, and we have to make a website on how that topic is used in chemistry,” Oh said. 

His Experience In DECA: “I started back in junior year because I thought it was interesting,” he said. “But it was much bigger than I expected. It has also helped me pick my major for college, which is business.”

Best Thing About PV: The atmosphere of PV

Favorite Teacher: Mrs. Ricca (PV math and computer science teacher). “I’ve had her for three years and each year she always makes the class really interesting,” Oh said.

One Superpower: Superspeed

What He Does In His Free Time: Oh likes to spend time browsing the internet. He enjoys scrolling through Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites. Currently, he spends a lot of time playing Pokémon. 

One Thing People May Not Know: Oh has a talent where he can tell the exact note someone is playing on any instrument.  

Role Models: His father. “He used to run track for the Korean national team, he was on the special forces of Korea, and grew up on a farm. He managed to work his way up to emigrate to America,” Oh said. 

Future Plans: Oh will attend Rutgers Honors College in the fall. While at Rutgers, he plans to play intramural tennis.
