Boys basketball to feature young lineup

Coleman emphasizes unselfish style of play

Max Yellin dribbles the ball for Pascack Valley during a game last year. He and fellow senior Justin Nicita will take on leadership roles for a relatively inexperienced Indians’ team.

Coach: Al Coleman (12th season)

Last year’s record: 10-16

Outlook: With just two returners from last year’s team, the Indians will put a lot of emphasis on developing the team’s underclassmen over the course of the season. Coleman said this team will need to build chemistry by playing unselfish basketball.

Key Returners: Max Yellin (Sr.), Justin Nicita (Sr.)

Key Losses: Justin Schaumberger, Alex Lin, Matt Harris

Key Newcomers: Nate Dedrick (Jr.), Austin Koolery (So.), Thomas Dean (So.)

Strength of team: “They really play for one-another,” Coleman said. “They’re very accountable, they point with their thumbs and not with their fingers.”

Weakness of team: With only two returning players from last season, inexperience is the team’s biggest weakness. “Growing pains are sure to ensue, but hopefully as we continue to get games under our belt, we’ll progress [to get] better and better,” Coleman said.

Coach’s Comment: “[The most important aspect of the game is] being unselfish,” Coleman said. “The ability to make the extra pass, the ability to find the open man, the ability to keep the ball moving and taking care of the basketball. Just do all the little things well and it’ll equate to a big difference in the game.”

Starting Lineup: “It’ll depend on who we’re playing,” Coleman said. “We can go a million different ways.”
