Boys tennis player profile: Austin Davis

Third singles player Austin Davis has learned that hard work and competitiveness go a long way in tennis. A year ago, Davis was a freshman on the JV tennis team with varsity ambitions. His goal was to play varsity tennis this year, and that is exactly what he has done.

Davis entered this season playing third singles, but has spent most of the season playing second or even first singles. The competition at first and second singles is much more intense than it is at third singles, but Davis has embraced his role and is enthusiastic about playing tougher opponents.

“The competition is much better,” admitted Davis, “but I have to keep grinding it out.”

Davis has not only played in first and secon singles matches, but he has also found success in those matches. While playing up, Davis has won matches at second singles and given opponents a run for their money at 1st singles.

“Playing up as a sophomore is impressive,” said coach Scott Grapin, who believes that his young sophomore has a shot to make a run in the Bergen County tournament at third singles.

“Austin has so much more control than he did in the past and is very competitive. He has embraced the role of underdog this season,” added Grapin.

Davis does have a great chance to turn some heads at the Bergen County tournament, because he will be returning to his normal spot at third singles. Seniors Josh Kasper and Roger Zlotolow will also be returning to their respective spots. Davis credits some of his success to these two seniors as well.

“Roger is the captain, but Josh certainly acts like one,” said Davis of his senior teammates.

Davis relies on his teammates to push him in practice and during matches, but the team is also very close off the court.

“We have a lot of great personalities on the team,” said Davis of his teammates.

Grapin looks for Davis to be a leader on and off the court in his own right for the next two seasons.

“Now that Austin has lots of varsity experience, he should be even more successful in the future,” said Coach Grapin, who looks to improve his team each year.

With lots of varsity experience and the drive to win, the sky is the limit for Davis, who still has two more years to achieve his future goals.
