Civil War: worth the wait
Being the major Marvel fan I am, I was immensely excited for the movie, “Captain America: Civil War”, and it did not disappoint.
The story itself (no spoilers don’t worry!,) was concise, entertaining, and kept you guessing until the end. It also built up the already existing characters perfectly, and added in new characters to the universe seamlessly.
Since it is a Captain America movie, Chris Evans was front and center, and he did not falter with that fact. His performance as Captain America added more to our favorite super solider, and showed how he is more layered and even a touch darker than we first perceived in the first two movies. His humor mixed with the serious moments when we see his unfaltering ideals were performed with a level of authenticity that most actors take years to create and gain. In short, his performance was what we expected it to be: super (pun intended).
Robert Downey Jr., of course, was the thorn in the Captain’s side as the ever sassy, ever sarcastic, and ever amazing Iron Man. Downey’s performance in this film shows more of Tony’s serious side, alongside of his heart. Though for many his opinion is unpopular, his commitment to it is one of character and grace rather than stubbornness. We also see some of his vulnerability when it came to his family which added to the character’s layers and his overall character.
Sebastian Stan’s Bucky was involved in the major conflict in this particular film. His performance showed his character and his struggle to get back to the man he remembers but no longer is. His bond with Evans and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie,) allowed us moments of levity and moments of character development, especially with Evans character as the two try to figure out what to do and see how much the other have changed during their time apart. The bond is still there, and throughout the film, it gets stronger, which I know makes many fans happy.
The other characters, such as Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, were just as dynamic in this conflict, letting their characters grow and adding depth to old and new ones. Their performances allowed the film to come together into the blockbuster we knew it would be.
The Russo Brothers certainly knew the characters intimately, allowing us the fantastic story and choices these characters made on screen. Alongside that, the fight sequences, explosions, and mystery built the story into an ‘edge of your seat’ thriller. This of itself is fantastic since these two are now at the helm of this beloved universe, so it looks like the future is in good hands. In short, I smell an Oscar for these two.
The film will definitely make any Marvel fan jump for joy and make a new fan amazed at the sophistication of the franchise as a whole. So, get a ticket ASAP. This is a definite must see.
