Season Recap: Defense anchors girls soccer success
The Pascack Valley Girls Soccer team ended its 2015-16 campaign with a 10-6-1 record, and earned the No. 11 seed in both the county and state tournaments.
This season included many ups and downs for the Indians. The girls started the season strong going 5-0-1, including a tie with Old Tappan 1-1 in the season opener on September 10 and a key overtime win against Demarest on September 19. However, the team’s success would not last as the Indians went, 1-5 in their next six games including losses at home to IHA by a score of 4-0, a loss at home to Indian Hills by a score of 1-0, and an early county tournament loss at home to River Dell 2-1.
The Indians picked it up in their last 5 going 4-1, and in all of those victories the Indians defense held their opponents to four consecutive shutouts. Their lone loss, came in the first round of the state tournament at the hands of #6 seed Wayne Valley in the state tournament by a score of 1-0, effectively ending the Indians season.
The girls had many positives to look back on at the end of this season. Their defense came up big in their games led by Jillian LaRocca (Sr.) Christine Franklin, (Sr.) Melissa Jones (Sr.), Rachael White (So.), and goalkeeper Gina Criscuolo (Sr.) who had 68 saves on the season. In 17 total games, the defense held eight of their opponents to shutouts.
On the offensive side of the ball, Elizabeth Spadafino (So. FWD) had 10 goals, and Katie Gallagher (Sr.) had 8 goals.
Another positive to look at, is the returning players for next season, including freshman Arianna Quevedo. She was a standout in her first varsity season contributing 5 goals on the season. Including a game-winning overtime goal against Demarest on September 19. Along with Quevedo, the Indians will have 16 returning players on the current varsity roster for next season.
