Devanna’s walk-off leads Indians

Sophomore catcher Jack Devanna’s walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth inning led the PV baseball team to their fifth victory over Hackensack, 6-5.

Devanna, who came up with the bases loaded after a Dan Corvo RBI walk, drilled the ball to deep right center field, hitting the fence and driving both Nick and Matt Novakowski in for the tying and game winning runs.

“It was a little up and away, right where I like it,” Devanna said.

The hit was part of Devanna’s 2-for-5 3 RBI day, the other hit coming on a double in the sixth inning.

The Indian’s trademark pitching was great yet again. Senior starter Ryan Vasel went 7.1 innings, striking out seven and giving up only three runs.

“Vasel pitched really well,” said senior shortstop Ron Villone, whose fielder’s choice in the bottom of the ninth started the rally for the Indians.

After Vasel was taken out, senior Matt Ogus came in with the game tied at three and gave up the two runs in the ninth inning that gave Hackensack a 5-3 lead.  Ogus only gave up two hits, but a series of walks hampered his very solid outing.

Senior Chase Strynkowski came in after Ogus, where a hit could put the game out of hand. Strynkowski came out and threw gas, getting two outs very quickly, giving the Indians life going into the bottom of the ninth.

“We never gave up till the very end,” Villone said.

The win gives the Indians a 5-3 record on the season. The play again on Thursday against River Dell at home, before going on a two game road trip against Ramsey and Ridgewood.
