Evans qualifies for XC state groups

The 2015 cross country season has finally come to an end, that is for most at least.

Junior cross country star Ashley Evans put on a spectacular show finishing 11th overall at the Bergen County Meet of Champions. As she has done so many times in the past, Evans finished first for Pascack Valley at the girls’ last meet at Darlington Park.

The girls’ team ran on the October 31, or better known as Halloween. The Indians, with painted faces in costume, ran at Darlington, a course that is known to be the easiest course out of the three, Garret Mountain, Holmdel, and Darlington Park.

The Pascack Valley girls cross country team has had success all year long and finished third in the league championship meet at Garret Mountain, qualifying the team for the Bergen County Meet of Champions.

Despite Evans’ performance, the girls finished at a disappointing 10th out of 13 teams. Following Evans were Marlo Guastella in 54th place and Megan Thorn who finished in 73rd place.

State sectionals was a different story for the girls. They ran a lot better, finishing 8th out of 16 teams. With yet another great performance from Evans, who finished 9th overall with a time of 19:51. This performance was enough for Evans to qualify for the state groups race next weekend. This came as no shock to anyone who knows Ashley as a runner because she always delivers in the clutch. She has been consistent for this team all season and contributed when it counted the most last Saturday at Darlington.

In spite of this, Evans obviously needed some help from the rest of her team, and help she got. Marlo Guastella once again finished 2nd for PV and finished 37th overall with a time of 21:50 and Megan Thorn at 44th overall.

The boys did not qualify for the Bergen County Meet of Champions, so they only ran at the state sectionals at Garret Mountain, the toughest course, this past Saturday.

Without junior standout Jeff Roberts, the team was in a tough position going into the race.

John Coyle finished first for PV,  and came in 59th overall in the race, with a final time of 18:37. Coyle was then followed by team captain Evan Jones who finished 62nd overall. Lastly, a new name, Sean Donohue finished in the top 3 for Valley for the first time this year, finishing 75th overall.

This Week: Ashley Evans will run at the state group race.
