Family tradition lives on
Beyer to wrestle at Ithaca
It’s safe to say that wrestling success runs in the Beyer family.
PV senior Matt Beyer’s father and current assistant coach, Gary Beyer, was a successful wrestler for PV, as was Matt’s uncle, Eric Beyer, during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Gary was a Region 1 champion in 1978, and Eric received the same honor in 1983. And now, after four years at Pascack Valley, Matt will be continuing his wrestling career at Ithaca College.
Matt was introduced to wrestling by his dad at a young age and from there he loved it. Since then, Gary has supported his son throughout the entirety of his wrestling career.
”[My dad] definitely [has] had a huge impact on me,” Beyer said. “Just because I look up to him and he has helped me with everything.”
Beyer has put in a lot of time to improve as a wrestler during his time at Pascack Valley. PV coach Tom Gallione had very high praise for Beyer when he described his work ethic.
“In 14 years he is probably the hardest working kid I have ever coached,” Gallione said. “He got this opportunity to wrestle at Ithaca due to the hard work.”
Though Beyer had a number different options as to where to continue his academic and athletic careers, he ultimately decided on Ithaca.
“I decided I liked Ithaca as far as the team camaraderie, and the location just felt like a great fit for me,” Beyer said.
Coming off of a 22-8 record last year, Beyer will look to keep winning and return to the individual state tournament in Atlantic City.
If he can do that, he may find himself up there with his dad and uncle amongst the greats of PV wrestling.
