Female Athlete of the Month: Morgan Jones
Starting the year strong with her team’s impressive 8-1 record and recently recording her 200th save as a varsity goalie, Morgan Jones has been integral to PV’s girls lacrosse team’s success thus far.
While Jones and her team’s success has shown on the field, Jones explains that she has focused on creating a team bond that could, in turn, lead to success.
“…I know you can really have a team bond in any sport, but in lacrosse you rely on your teammates to work together to score a goal or play defense,” Jones said. “We all work together, and that is the most important part of the sport.”
Girls Lacrosse Head Coach Melissa Velez has nothing but praise for Jones’s leadership and success on and off the field.
“I don’t think I can describe her just this season; she has been a leader all four of her seasons she’s been here,” Velez said. “She came in with the mindset of being positive, and [she is] leaving behind a big role to fill—but an exciting one.”
While Jones has played other sports, Jones stuck with lacrosse: from her youth through her senior year of high school.
“As a kid I used to play every kind of sport, and then I decided I wanted to try lacrosse, and that’s how I got here,” Jones said.
Jones wanted to play lacrosse in college; however, she shifted her thinking and elected to go the traditional college route.
Jones doesn’t follow any professional lacrosse teams, but she says that she enjoys watching college lacrosse; the team she watches the most is The University of North Carolina. Jones attributes the college lacrosse games she has watched to her success, claiming “…that’s how I got really excited for games”.
Jones will attend James Madison University next fall, studying biology on a pre-med track, as she hopes to eventually become a doctor.
