Bergenfield Rankings: No. 199 in NJ (MaxPreps.com)

PV Rankings: No. 5 in North Jersey (Bergen Record), No. 9 in NJ (MaxPreps.com), No. 12 in NJ (Star-Ledger)

PV Perspective: The Indians will look to continue their winning ways as they face Bergenfield, which is fresh off an upset win against Paramus. Although their record may not reflect it, the Bears do have a shot to pull off another incredible upset with their playmaking duo, Jovani and DJ Haskins. As long as the PV defense can shut these two down, they should be able to walk away with another win. This game will hopefully just not be as nerve-wracking as PV’s game last week, which it won in a nail-biter against Wayne Hills.

Bergenfield Breakdown: With a 20-14 upset last week over Paramus (which PV topped in last year’s North 1, Group 4 final), Bergenfield improved to 1-3 on the season, and Paramus, which entered undefeated, fell to 3-1. QB/TE Jovani Haskins, who has received offers from such schools as Rutgers, Syracuse, Ole Miss, and Boston College, went 8-for-13 with 149 yards and 2 TDs, both of which went to his brother, WR DJ Haskins, who had 8 receptions for 154 yards.

With the score tied in the last few seconds of regulation, Paramus missed a field goal to send the game into OT. Paramus rushed for 164 yards on 48 attempts, whereas Bergenfield rushed for 104 yds on 32 attempts. The aerial game was more to Bergenfield’s liking, as they passed for 148 yards compared to Paramus’s 62.

Key Matchups:

Haskins Brothers vs PV Secondary: DJ Haskin’s efforts against Paramus were good enough to earn him The Record Athlete of the Week. Jovani Haskins threw those two TDs and completed all 8 of his completions to his brother. The PV secondary will have to watch out for Bergenfield’s dynamic duo. The Haskins brothers are the main two playmakers on Bergenfield’s offense and if they can be shut down in the passing game, Bergenfield does not have many other offensive options. If the PV defense can force Bergenfield mistakes and possibly interceptions, then they should be able to keep the Bears from scoring.

PV Offensive Line vs. Bergenfield Pass Rush: The PV offensive line has done a great job at keeping QB Colin Dedrick on his feet all season long. Bergenfield recorded four sacks against Paramus, each sack by a different defender. Although the pass rush of Bergenfield was stellar, look for the PV offensive line to create opportunities in the pass and the run game this Friday. PV’s offensive line has allowed for Jorge Cortes to average 94.8 rushing yards/game, and it has allowed less than 2 sacks/game.

Predictions:

Evan Jones (2-0): 28-14

Calvin Ralph (2-0): 28-7 PV

Jake Aferiat (2-0) 21-10 PV
