Girls lacrosse plans to overcome lost 2020 season with promising young core
Spring sports were hit hard last year, essentially missing the entire season due to COVID-19. Girls lacrosse coach Melissa Velez thinks the loss of last season will be the team’s toughest challenge in the 2021 season.
“Our lack of experience as a whole group would be the only weakness I can think of right now,” Velez said.
However, this year looks promising and the team has many young players that will have big roles on the team, including sophomores Hannah Zeman, Bella Alepa, and Morgan Jones.
Velez’s main goal ahead of the season is for the team to improve, one way or another.
“Our main goal is to obviously improve every single day, not just in our games and scrimmages, but in our practices [too],” Velez said.
Although the team had an underwhelming season two years ago, Velez is hopeful that this season will be a success. She believes that the strength of the team lies within the team as a whole and their work ethic.
“The best thing about this team is the fact that they are bringing a lot of energy and they are working really hard against each other,” Velez says, “I think that in all of our best seasons the best thing about those teams has always been making each other better, and I think we are definitely doing that right now.”
Velez hopes the team will be successful behind a young core and experienced juniors and seniors who have varsity experience,
The future looks bright for girls lacrosse at PV.
