Girls Soccer Gaining Momentum and Dominating Opponents
Last Thursday night, the Pascack Valley Girls Soccer Team (8-5-1) looked to take the momentum it gained from its dominating 5-0 victory away at Tenafly (2-10-3) on, and carry it into the team’s game against Demarest (6-8).
The Indians faced Demarest earlier this season and came out victorious in 1-0 over-time thriller, with the game-winning goal scored by Arianna Quevedo (Fr.) however, since that game both teams have went on different paths. Before the loss, Demarest, then 3-0, were dominating division opponents, such as Bergenfield, Teaneck, and Tenafly, but that quickly all changed once they played the Indians.
After the tough overtime loss on September 19 to the Indians, the Norsemen went on a seven game losing skid that included no goals from the team in all seven of those games.
Pascack Valley, on the other hand, started the season off (2-0-1) leading up to the game with Demarest, including an impressive 7-0 victory over Bergenfield, and a tie with rival Old Tappan 1-1 in the season opener. After the win against Demarest, the team’s success took a turn as it went into the tougher part of their schedule. In their next eight games, the Indians went 3-5, including an early exit in the county tournament due to a tough 2-1 loss to River Dell. The other teams the Indians played included, nationally ranked IHA (14-3), whom they lost too at home 4-0, Wayne Hills (14-2) whom they lost to 1-0 at Wayne Hills, and Old Tappan (11-3-2), whom they lost too at home 4-0.
Both teams were looking to take the opportunity to get back on track and get a win against a division opponent. The Indians took that opportunity and dominated throughout the game. They won in convincing fashion 3-0 in front of the home crowd, and moved their record to 7-5-1. The goal scorers in this one were Cassidy Mazzone (Sr.) with two goals, and Chelsea Lee (Sr.) with one goal. Chloe Witt (Jr.) and Katie Gallagher (Sr.) also had one assist each in the victory over Demarest.
The girl’s next opponent was at Westwood (7-7-2) this past Saturday. The Indians, yet again, looked to carry their momentum from their two dominating victories, against the likes of Tenafly and Demarest into this one, and they did just that. They beat the Cardinals 3-0 making it the team’s third straight shutout, thanks to the defense and Goalie Gina Criscuolo (Sr.) who had 7 saves in the win against Westwood. Goal scorers in this game included Gallagher with one goal., and Kelly Petro (So.) with two goals. Allie Kasper (Jr.) and Jenny LaRocca (So.) also had assists in the winning effort.
The Pascack Valley Indians now (8-5-1) look to finish out their regular season with two big victories over the likes of Teaneck (4-11-1) this Tuesday in Teaneck at 4:15 p.m. The Indians already have a win against Teaneck, when they beat them at home 4-0 earlier this season. On Thursday night, the girls will play the Bergenfield Bears (2-12) at 7 p.m., for their regular season finale. Previously, the Indians won against the Bears, at Bergenfield, in convincing fashion, 7-0, and they will look to dominate them yet again at home this Thursday night.
