Girls swimming finishes sixth in counties
Pascack Regional unable to win its league for ninth straight year
Editor’s Note: Changes have been made to this story, as seedings for the State Sectional Tournament were released.
On Jan. 26 at the Felix Festa Middle School Pool in West Nyack, New York, the Pascack Regional swim team took on 18 other high school teams at the Bergen County Meet of Champions. The girls finished sixth overall with a final score of 92, including a fourth place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1.54.77. Meanwhile, the boys swim team took fifteenth place.
On top of the team’s performance in the medley relay, freshman Cori Freeman took sixth place in 100 backstroke and claimed the school’s record for that event with a time of 58.98. In doing so, she broke her older sister Cassidy’s school record. Cassidy currently swims for Boston University.
Senior and Lafayette commit Haleigh Marzano took 3rd place in the individual medley with a time of 2:10.11. In the 100 breaststroke, she took second place with a time of 1:06.03 and broke her own previous school record time of 1:06.62.
At the Big North Liberty Meet on Tuesday, Jan. 29, Marzano also placed first in the for the 50 and 100 freestyle. The team placed second overall behind Passaic County Technical Institute, marking the first time in nine years that Pascack Regional didn’t win its league.
A high point for Pascack Regional coach Courtney Farrell was that junior Katie Smith dropped around six seconds off of her seed time. Smith ended up beating the competitors in her heat while passing the racers in the heat before her.
“I am nothing but proud of this team and their accomplishments in the water,” Farrell said. “They swam their hearts out, they beat their times, and they left it all out there. I can’t really ask for anything more.”
The girls will be the No. 6 seed in the state sectional tournament, while the boys will be the No. 8 seed. The girls will swim against No. 7 Livingston in the first round, while the boys will take on No. 5 Livingston. Both teams will swim on Feb. 5.
Willy Higgins graduated in 2021.
