Glamour Gals is more than a PV club
Glamour Gals is not just a club. It is a way to give back to the community and brighten someone’s day.
Each week a group of girls, selected by the club’s leader, Marissa Masseria, go to the assisted living homes in River Vale and Rockley NY. At these homes, they give manicures and chat with the elderly people that live there.
The head of the club, Miss Marchiano said that the students “form bonds and relationships with them.” Unlike most clubs at PV, this is a national club that “we are just a chapter of,” said Marchiano.
In addition, sometimes the meetings become a history lesson to the club members. Marchiano recalls a time where one of the ladies, told the members about how she survived the Holocaust and then met her husband after. Each member of Glamour Gals has an opportunity to learn a little bit of history in a way that a textbook can never do. The routine is usually the same but occasionally they will mix it up with some singing.
The President, Marissa Masseria, has been part of the club for four years now.
“It is such a satisfying feeling to see a room full of smiling women and just being able to give them the one on one attention,” said Masseria.
She explained that the men and women there have so many interesting stories about their past to tell her. She enjoyed Glamour Gals so much that it helped her realize that she loved caring for people and it influenced what she is planning to study in college.
No matter how stressful their week had been, the mood of the ladies brightens the members’ days.
“It’s so cute how excited the ladies are,” Marchiano said. They often will say how they want to go out to show off their nails to people. The visits are truly the highlight of their week.
Marchiano said that the club members are “able to see from the first trip how encouraging the elderly are,” and that the ladies are just happy to have someone new to visit with each week.
