Golf team faces tough circumstances
Every team must struggle in order to see their strength, and that is exactly what is happening with the PV golf team. With three losses this past week, the team is looking to keep their heads up going into this week in order to shoot some low scores and win some matches.
Part of the problem the golfers are facing is that their home course, Edgewood Country Club, was closed for a short period of time due to financial issues. The team’s coach, Mr. Dom Mingione, moved most of the matches to River Vale Country Club, a less favorable course for the team. The course is much harder, and is less favorable to not only the school golfers, but the general public as well. River Vale is currently under construction as well, so only nine of its eighteen holes are open. The school teams are playing in between the matches of the regular patrons.
With that being said, the inconsistency of all the golfers in general could also be a cause of their shortcomings, but that should be changing soon, as the opening of Edgewood and more practice time gives golfers the opportunity to get onto the course more often.
This week with only one match at River Vale, the team should thrive at some easier courses. Look out for juniors Rob Carcich, Will Gallagher and Calvin Ralph to be shooting lower scores for the team.
LAST WEEK: The team lost three matches. Monday against Demarest the team lost by a mere 5 strokes with Will Gallagher shooting a score of 45. Tuesday, another tough loss by 6, saw Gallagher as the low scorer again, shooting a 43. Thursday was only an 8-point loss with Gallagher shooting a 39.
THIS WEEK: The team is playing in four matches this week: today vs. Northern Highlands at River Vale Country Club, Wednesday against Glen Rock at Paramus Golf Course, Thursday at Valley Brook facing River Dell and Friday at Rockleigh Golf Course against Dumont.
Claudia Ralph graduated in 2016.
