Gymnastics team aims to rebound after loss of last year’s seniors
PVRG looks for newcomers to step up and fill the void left by graduated seniors
Coach: Alison Petaccia
Last year’s record: 9-0
Key Returners: Amanda Solda (Senior, Pascack Valley), Rachael Shakarjian (Junior, Pascack Valley), Ashley Lowe (Junior, Pascack Valley), Hallie Wikfors (Senior, Pascack Hills), Maya Horowitz (Senior, Pascack Hills)
Key Losses: Melissa Ricciardi and Marissa McGrane
Key Newcomers: Bridget Coyle (Junior, Pascack Valley) and Kate Ng (Junior, Pascack Valley)
Strength of team: The Pascack Valley Regional Gymnastics (PVRG) team consists of many veteran competitors, four of whom are seniors. The majority of the team possesses experience in tournaments which is an important contributing factor to their recent success.
Weakness of team: The class of 2019 contained a lot of key competitors, so their departure has left an impact on the team. PVRG will have less depth this season due to the lack of freshmen, so it will have to rely on its starters.
Outlook: PVRG’s goals include contention at Bergen County Championships, the league tournament, and State Sectionals.
Coach’s Comment: “This year will be a shift from last year because we’ll have more competitors contributing to our final score and we’re looking forward to see who will rise to the occasion,” Petaccia said. “We’re very proud of our hard work and are looking forward to a great season.”
Starters: Amanda Solda (vault, beam, floor), Maya Horowitz (vault, beam, bars, floor), Hallie Wikfors (vault, beam, bars, floor), Ashley Lowe (vault, beam, floor), Kate Ng (beam, bars, floor), Rachael Shakarjian (vault, floor), Bridget Coyle (vault), Grayson Catherwood (vault)
Outcome of first meet: PVRG won its first meeting by a score of 105.4- 96.65 against Ramapo. The team overcame many mental obstacles and, as a result of that, was able to start the season off well. Petaccia said, “In the past they took more time to get where they needed to be by week 1, so this year it was exciting to see the girls ready to go.”
Willy Higgins graduated in 2021.
