Indians surprised by Ramapo
Things simply did not go Pascack Valley’s on Saturday.
The wind was blowing, and the temperature was dropping as a Pascack Valley team came into Ramapo looking for a win to clinch the League title. It would be no easy task for Valley and at the end of the day it proved to be a little too much for PV.
Trailing 21-7 at half, PV stormed back but fell to Ramapo 21-19 at Ramapo High School. A huge part of this game was Ramapo’s Matt Giacose who ran for 133 yards on 25 rushes. Ramapo’s rush defense was effective as well holding PV to 114 rushing yards.
When asked about how his squad came back in the second half, PV coach Craig Nielsen simply said, “We played better.”
In the second half PV passed the ball a lot more, moving the ball down field quicker. Mike Pimpinella had a big game receiving with 8 catches for 183 yards.
Rocco Swatek’s second touchdown run of the day enabled the Indians (6-2) to draw within 21-19 with six-plus minutes left, but a 2-point conversion attempt that could have tied the game failed.
Valley had one last gasp and was driving down the field in the game’s waning moments, reaching the Ramapo 22-yard line before Colin Dedrick was sacked by Justin Yandoli. A deep pass from Dedrick was then intercepted in the end zone as time expired.
Saturday’s loss was the first to a public school this year for PV and snapped the Indians’ five-game win streak. The Green Raiders improved to 6-2, captured their first league title since 2004, and defeated PV for the first time since a 31-23 triumph in 2009.
