Indians victorious on senior night
“Since I’ve been here this group of seniors has made one of the biggest commitments to improve,” said boys lacrosse Craig Buckley of the twelve seniors that were honored on Thursday night, “To get to this level, you have to play all year, these kids do and it shows.”
The night also included a 7-4 win over Glen Rock. The win by the Indians comes after a hard fought 6-3 loss to Northern Highlands in the second round of the Bergen County Tournament.
Defensively, PV has been stingy this season, allowing opponents to score just 5.27 goals per game. Only one opponent has been able to record double digits. On Thursday, the Indians were able to shutout Glen Rock during the opening 31:30 of the game, until the Panthers finally scored with 3:30 minutes left in the third to make it a 7-1 game.
For as tremendous as the defense has been, the offense has been equally as good, averaging 10.45 goals per game. Leading the offense is senior captain Jimmy Spillane.
Senior night was no different, as the Indians would score seven unanswered goals to open the game, including five by seniors. Those seven goals proved to be enough, despite that total being the fewest goals the Indians have scored in a win thus far.
The Indians’ offense flows through Spillane, who serves as the catalyst that gets the offense started due to his skill and mastery at taking faceoffs.
Throughout his varsity career, Spillane has been known as the primary faceoff man for the Indians, and as a result of his prolonged success in the area, he was able to record his milestone 500th faceoff victory to begin the fourth quarter of Thursday’s game.
“It was honestly more my mom’s thing than mine,” he chuckled, “But it feels great to reach it, and it means a lot to get there.”
In addition to being adept at taking faceoffs, Spillane has become one of PV’s top scoring threats, including an incredible diving goal to put PV up 4-0.
“I’m really happy with my progression from just strictly a faceoff man sophomore year to now being a go to guy,” Spillane said of his growth and improvement.
Spillane isn’t the only one who has improved since his varsity career began.
“Ever since I started playing, I’ve picked an area to improve upon and excel at each year,” said junior Conor Kimball, who currently has 22 goals so far this season, his first as a varsity starter.
It seems as though the Indians stellar overall play has turned heads and may lead to a high seed in the state tournament.
“We’re playing really well right now, and as a result, Pascack Valley lacrosse is gaining a certain notoriety and legitimacy,” said Buckley.
