Some individuals view the Indians as a lasting tradition and strongly feel that we are losing our school spirit. However, I feel that the idea that the removal of the mascot coincided with a loss of school spirit is debatable. The idea of a school adopting a mascot is to create a sense of unity, not at all like the division in which the Indian mascot produced. Although it has been overdue, I admire, despite a few in opposition to such change, how students have taken the initiative to make a literal change in mascot and take a step further in creating awareness surrounding such issues. I believe that a mascot should represent the students, faculty, and the school in its entirety. With this being said, our mascot should be one that is an equal and fair representation of the community and I’m glad that our school has taken a step in finding mascot options that do not offend anyone.
