Juniors promote self-positivity through sticky notes
Four or five sticky notes that possess the ability to drastically change someone’s life line the walls of each of the school’s bathrooms.
With inspirational quotes to help anyone through a rough day, the Suicide Prevention Hotline number, and the website operationbeautiful.com written on them, these sticky notes can be seen as much more than some notes on the bathroom wall.
Aria Sen and Jenna Tracy, two juniors at Pascack Valley, picked Operation Beautiful as a good deed to do for 9/11 Day for their history class.
Operation Beautiful promotes self-positivity and encourages people to spread inspirational quotes and kind words through post- it notes in public places. The website mainly focuses on physical beauty, but Sen and Tracy wanted to fill the sticky notes with motivational quotes instead.
Sen found Operation Beautiful and Tracy liked the idea so much, she decided to post the notes too.
“I kind of just wanted to make people’s day that much greater. I figured that a lot of people go into the bathroom to escape the classroom and not deal with what’s going on so I figured that it would make their day better,” Sen said.
After putting up the notes anonymously, Sen and Tracy tweeted about them, using the hashtag #pvus2ap. Soon, other students noticed the notes and began tweeting about them as well.
“When I first saw the tweets of the post-its, I thought it was a really clever and cool idea. I later went onto the website and I just thought that it was really wonderful,” said junior Sara Biasi.
Junior Kendall Cottrell, who was with Sen and and Tracy the day they put the sticky notes up, said, “I thought it was a seriously good idea to reach out to kids who may not know how to reach out to others or maybe just feel uncomfortable to. There are a lot of kids who are going through terrible and oppressing things that don’t know what to do, so these notes really encourage kids and tell them it’s okay to ask for help. It made me feel hopeful for humanity that people are so willing to help others.”
