Letter to the Editor: A divided nation must come together

America should come together and unite after election of Donald Trump.

The outcome of this past week’s presidential election has come as a shock to many. With both candidates being such polarizing figures for their respective ideologies and policies, one large group of people was bound to be devastated by the results.

I will also admit the outcome of the election is not what I hoped for it to be but it is not the end of the world and should serve as a wake up call for many Americans. We cannot let this election divide us; we must come together as one and be stronger than ever before.

If this election proves anything, it is that the system works. The people have voted and the people have spoken. Donald Trump is the President of the United States and complaining on social media and rioting in the streets is not going to change that. This generation of people who get their hands held through life and whine about everything that doesn’t go their way need to wake up and realize not everything is going to be the way they want it.

President Obama once said, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

If you are not happy with the results of this election, then get involved. Go to meetings, contact your local representatives, donate your time, and be the change you wish to make. Complaining about things that will not change will get us no where as a country and will stop progress from happening.

We all have to remember that the people are what make this country great, not the people in shirts and ties on Capitol Hill. If you are happy with the election results, do you truly know why? If not than that is just another part of the problem.

So many people are uneducated on various issues at hand in the United States which is sad to see. This election season, more than any other, should make people want to truly have an understanding of what is going on in the world around them and to have their own opinion on what should be done, not their friends’ or their parents’ opinion.

Also, change doesn’t just happen every four years, so no one should disappear and stop paying attention to the political landscape and come back for the next presidential election. New people get elected every year and if you want to see change get involved in those elections and spread your message for the next four years not in four years.

Yes, for many this is a scary time where we truly have no idea what a Trump presidency will bring us, but we can’t let this make us weak. We are a country built for the people and by the people and he was elected to serve the citizens of the United States, and yes that means all of us.
