Musician of the Week: Evan Tinati
Evan Tinati is our next Musician of the Week! He is a current senior at PV and is part of the Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Bro Squad. Evan is another one of those student who brings an extreme amount of talent to the music department at PVHS.
Why did you start playing
your instrument?
In all honestly, I started out as a way of getting out of certain classes. Growing up, I had a tendency of gravitating towards math and science classes, and felt as though the humanities classes were a waste of valuable time to do bigger and better things. When I found out that music would conflict with the humanities classes, I jumped at the opportunity to join. Little did I know how much fun it would be to create your own music at ease. It also currently serves as a form of escapism from my daily life, so that became an added bonus for me after discovering a newly unlocked passion.
How long have you’ve been playing?
I have been playing the trumpet since the 4th grade. Additionally, I received a recorder in second grade, when they provided them to every elementary student, and I still play to this day. After hearing various performances and recordings of concert and marching bands, I would only hear the melodious sounds of the trumpet being blasted above all other instruments. Thus, I chose to commence my music career by playing the trumpet, because as a young and impressionable child, I did not see much of an importance in the other instruments if they were not audible enough for the audience.
What musical organizations are you involved in?
I am currently a member of the trumpet section in PV’s Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, and Jazz Band, as well as a member of the Tri-M Music National Honors Society. Additionally, I am part of a small brass ensemble that performs at school and local events, such as the very recent performance of Dream On at the Halloween Talent Night.
Do you enjoy playing your instrument?
I am planning to go into Music Education for college to try and become a music teacher, so I guess you could say that I enjoy singing and playing.
What do you plan for playing music in the future?
As a future engineer/physicist, I also enjoy learning how to create certain instruments such as the violin, because not only do I get to develop instruments to produce sound, but I also implement my love of STEM fields to understand how everything works. That being said, we’ll see where this road takes me later on, as I might act on this interest in a few years once I have an abundance of time to pursue my non-academic interests.
Favorite Singer?
My favorite singer/musician is Billy Joel, because like my fellow musicians, I enjoy creating music for those who are all in the mood for a melody. All song references aside, his music is very pleasing to listen to, and serves as an escape from the daily rigors of living the life of a high school teenager. At some point during middle school, my teacher, Mrs. Donovan, made us listen to and psychoanalyze the lyrics to his song titled “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant”. From this day, my tastes in music truly began to develop and distinguish themselves. Plus, modern popular music strays so far from that of the past, to the point where groaning can even be considered a song lyric of its own. With that in mind, I have a slowly increasing preference towards every other era except the current one. Though you never know till you try.
Other interests besides music:
With two very close friends acquired through martial arts at a young age, I am also a member of a currently-nameless band of string instruments and percussion that performs in the tri-boro area. Lastly, I will proudly admit to being a video game addict, so owning and being able to play a replica of the Ocarina of Time from various Zelda games allows me to connect with my childhood.
