Tommy DeVito began the 2024 season as the practice squad quarterback for the New York Giants but recently got the opportunity to be the starter. An alumnus of Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, New Jersey – DeVito has been a lifetime fan of the Giants and receiving the opportunity to not only play, but start for them was a dream come true.
With starting quarterback Daniel Jones going down on Nov. 5 and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor already injured from the week prior, DeVito was handed the keys to the Giant’s offense.
DeVito lost in his first career start for the Giants, causing the team’s record to fall to 2-8 and playoff chances to become slim. However, after his first game, DeVito went on to lead the Giants to three wins in a row, capped off by a game-winning drive against the Packers on Monday Night Football on Dec. 11.
The winning streak led by DeVito brought up the Giants’ chances of reaching the postseason. Yet, three straight losses since then forced the Giants to be eliminated from playoff contention. With DeVito struggling, Taylor was reinstated with the starting quarterback position after returning from his injury.
After being eliminated from playoff contention, Giants fans have turned their attention to the upcoming draft. Currently holding the 5th pick in the draft, the question has now become what should the Giants do with their draft pick?
As a Giants fan, I think that Joe Schoen, the general manager of the Giants, should draft an offensive lineman because that is the biggest issue the Giants have.
Many Giants fans believe that Jones is the problem, but no quarterback would be able to succeed behind this offensive line regardless of their prospect level. The Giants offensive line has given up the most sacks in the NFL this season and not solving the issue would cause trouble for any quarterback. Therefore, the right pick for the Giants is Joe Alt, an offensive tackle from Notre Dame. According to NFL Draft Buzz (Joe Alt Offensive Tackle Notre Dame | NFL Draft Profile & Scouting Report), Alt is a dominant pass protector who showcases a balanced set and a strong anchor with the agility to stop speed-rushers and bull-rushers. Alt has an overall rating of 92 and is ranked first at the tackle spot and third overall. In the 2023 season, Alt allowed just one sack and 5 pressures while being named a First-Team All-American. If the Giants were to select Alt, it would fill the need for the right tackle spot on the offensive line right away.
Even though the right pick for the New York Giants is Joe Alt, the Giants seem to also be interested in a wide receiver. If the Giants hold the fifth position in the draft after week 18, I believe they will take Malik Nabers out of LSU. Nabers is a top receiver in this upcoming draft that will provide Jones with a true wide receiver for the first time in his career. Nabers recorded 89 catches for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns and second place in the Fred Biletnikoff Award for best wide receiver. He holds the record for the most receiving yards in college football, and Nabers is the second-ranked draft prospect at wide receiver behind Marvin Harrison Jr. out of Ohio State.
As the draft process begins, seeing where the Giants will go with their pick will be interesting. I would like the Giants to select Alt with their first-round pick, but I would be content with Giants picking Nabers if that is what it comes to.
