The Golden Globes 82nd Annual Award Ceremony, hosted by Nikki Glaser, took place on Jan. 5, 2025.
After last year’s mishap with Jo Koy’s less-than-amusing monologue, I braced myself for this year. However, stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser was the perfect host.
Unlike past Golden Globes hosts, Glaser had me laughing and entertained. Her delivery and roasts could only be described as comedic gold.
Despite never having heard of Glaser before the ceremony, I was impressed by her ability to roast the celebrities without making offensive remarks. After looking at Glaser’s past work, it’s clear that she relies on harsh roasts to make people laugh, so I was impressed that she managed to keep her jokes fairly clean.
Glaser amended her style from when she appeared in The Roast of Tom Brady on Netflix. During the roast, her jokes were perfectly cruel and funny, but if she told the same jokes at the Golden Globes she would have been heavily criticized—much like Koy was.
My only note is that she should have eased up on the Timothée Chalamet jokes. Glaser spent a full minute of a ten-minute monologue roasting Chalamet, which is time that I think could’ve been used for better material. Even so, getting Adam Sandler to join in on the joke was a great touch.
There were some brash jokes that I enjoyed despite the harshness. For example, she joked about Ozempic and the celebrities’ inability to “tell the country who to vote for,” referring to the most recent presidential election.
Overall, Glaser did a wonderful job hosting the ceremony, especially as the first-ever solo female host of the Golden Globes. She has opened the door for more female comedians, and I’m excited to see more of her work.
Hosting an awards ceremony like the Golden Globes is known for making or breaking a career. Even though Nikki Glaser lost the category she was nominated for (Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television), this hosting job will definitely “make” Glaser’s career.
