One Spirit holds its second Hypnosis Night

Pascack Valley’s One Spirit club hosted a Hypnosis Night night on Nov. 29 in the PV auditorium. The money raised was used to fund one of their projects, The Okini Market.

Students apart of One Spirit have been working on the Okini Market project, creating a thrift shop, for the past two years. The idea was to create a place on the Pine Ridge Reservation to employ people and reuse clothing.

“The Pine Ridge reservation has [one of] the highest unemployment rates,” One Spirit advisor Leah Jerome said. “There’s not a lot of opportunity for jobs. So we were trying to say, okay, how can we create jobs on the reservation?”

One Spirit held a clothing drive at PV and then sent the clothing to the reservation so that people could sell them. Jerome said this shop on the reservation gave people access to clean clothing, which could be helpful for children going to school.

“The goal of our project is to empower and work with the community, not to say that they need us in any way but we have the means of offering aid, so how can we work together towards a common ending,” Jerome said.

Ava Kim, President of One Spirit, said that One Spirit held the same event in January 2019, raising over 10 thousand dollars. They raised five thousand dollars through the event and then TEEEM, a non-profit organization that works with high schools and humanitarian organizations, matched the amount raised.

“When we did [hypnosis night] in 2020 it was really fun,” Jerome said. “It’s really cool to have a hypnotist coming who is really talented and is really good at what he does. I really hope kids are motivated to come and colleagues as well [this year].”

Kim said that attendance this year wasn’t as high as it was when they did it in the past due to the fact that “a lot of the kids that came to PV haven’t seen the show before.”

“It’s a little bit hard to convince kids [who have activities like] homework, sports, and the play to come out at night,” Jerome said. “But, we have probably like 15 kids [in One Spirit] who are invested and care about it. Hopefully, we have a good turnout.”

To me, hypnosis was a surreal experience. I remember it all clearly, but I don’t believe I was fully in control of my actions. At first, I did not feel “under” hypnosis. While the people next to me were hysterically laughing because they believed they were watching the funniest TV show ever, I was fully aware there was no TV and felt excluded from the experience. When the hypnotist told us to h...

The experience was really interesting to me. I was very eager to see what hypnosis would be like, unfortunately, however, I don't think I went “under” during the show. I was trying to listen and wanted the experience to work, and I did have the same sensation as others, seeing a blueish-purple light on my eyelids. However, his suggestions were lost on me and I was more invested in watching how t...

Hypnosis is really not like the movies, and honestly, I was a little bit disappointed about the experience. You never truly lose consciousness—you know what’s going on the whole time, and you willingly perform all of the actions you’re told, like doing the chicken dance or screaming. You just have to be willing to participate. After this experience, I don’t really believe that there are actually...

When I decided to get hypnotized, I expected to be in a full trance, and although that didn’t fully happen, it was still a great experience. When the hypnotist first put us to sleep I felt dizzy. My body began to lose a lot of control, and I believed that I was being hypnotized. Then he decided to choose his first demonstrator, me. He told me to fall asleep, so I did, and then when I woke up I was s...
