Opening indoor track meet successful for Indians

Coaches did not expect Nolan Spillane to do much in his first high school meet, but the freshman certainly turned heads.

Spillane finished with a time of 2:45 in the 800m race at the FDU Holiday Classic on Friday. Coaches also noticed how much gas he had left in the tank after the race and saw his potential.

The first of two big wins for PV came off of Nurlan Herburger’s legs. Herburger won the varsity mile with a time of 4:46. Herburger will prove to one of the Indians leaders throughout the season.

The second win came from the girl’s 4×800 relay team, consisting of Marlo Guastello, Nikki Cirscuolo, Ashley Evans, and Chelsea Lee. The team ran a time of 10:22 and will look carry its momentum of their first win of the season into the latter meets of the season.

There was also controversy during the meet. Jake Denbeaux finished second in the 3200m with a time of 10:12, but was disqualified from because of an apparent elbow at the finish line. Denbeaux was leading the race the entire way, when a runner from North Bergen had gained on him, His first reaction was to block his fellow competitor, but the officials thought that Denbeaux had “thrown a bow” which led to his disqualification.
