Pascack Period Tour: Cake Decorating
(Editor’s note: This is the next installment of our “Pascack Period Tour” series designed to give our readers a taste of the array of offerings during Pascack Period this year.)
This Pascack Period is crazy for cake! The Basic Cake Decorating course is going to be taking place the entire year in room 116 during session B of the Pascack Period.
Miss Jessica Andersen, a nutrition & foods teacher and Varsity cheer coach here at Pascack Valley, is sharing her knowledge and love for baking with her small class of PV girls.
“I really enjoy decorating cakes and working with kids… I love to see the look on their faces when they find out they can do something they thought they couldn’t,” Andersen said.
Andersen has an undying passion for all things related to cooking and baking and loves that she has the ability and opportunity to pass her love onto her students.
For the beginning portion of the year, students are taught basic cake decorating skills and are given the opportunity to gradually build up these skills each week. As part of the course, students will be given a theme which they will focus their work on.
So far, the students have baked their own cakes and selected a Halloween theme to work on. Students have individually created and executed their own diverse decorations.
The girls taking Andersen’s course all have about the same amount of experience, although a few have taken Andersen’s Foods Class last year. Within the class, the girls have the opportunity to work at the same level and learn at their own pace.
Since the course is centered around decorating rather than baking, students can make their products in class and eat them on the the same day.
