PV closes out season in style
It was the best way to end any sports season, with a championship.
Top-seeded Pascack Valley rolled to a North 1, Group 4 state championship for the second straight season against the same opponent, No. 3 Paramus, at the same place, MetLife Stadium, with the score, 22-6 on Saturday night.
It started off with a great play action pass from junior quarterback Colin Dedrick to junior wide out Mike Pimpinella. Pimpinella made an Odell Beckham-esque catch to break the game open at 6-0, and then on the ensuing extra point, popped out of his holder stance and ran in for the two-point conversion.
To go along with his huge catch and two-point conversion, Pimpinella also had an interception and blocked a Paramus punt.
The defense really stepped up for the Indians, as it has for the entire season, holding the Spartans to just 128 total yards. Senior linebacker Greg Collier had 9 tackles and senior linebacker Rocco Swatek had 7 tackles. Senior cornerback Brian Horvath had an interception. The performance by the defense was the cherry on top of a great season.
The perks of playing in MetLife Stadium include the four video boards in each corner of the stadium. They enable fans, players, and coaches to see instant replays after big plays. In the NFL, they can help the coaches decide whether or not to challenge a call on the field.
On Saturday, what looked to be a fumble and recovery by the Valley defense was ruled a Paramus recovery. After showing the replay on the video screen, it was clear that the ball was out and recovered by PV. Unfortunately, the replay can not be used to reverse officiating decisions in high school football, and the blown call by officials led to the only Paramus touchdown in the game.
In the second half, Swatek had what was his biggest run of the season. He rumbled down the sidelines, breaking five tackles along the way, then put his head down and crushed a Paramus defender and found the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown.
The way it ended, could not be any other way that these group of players could ask for, especially running back Jorge Cortes.
“We talk about legacy and how it’s never been done before (at PV), winning twice in a row and that’s what we did,” said Cortes, who rushed for 1,674 yards on the year, the ninth highest total in the state this season.
