PV Provide hosts Sleep Out for students and faculty

PV Provide, a student-lead organization by Mr. Matthew Morone’s Honors sophomore English class, hosted a Sleep Out event this past Saturday beginning at 7 p.m on the PV football field. The event continued into the night as students slept in sleeping bags with boxes and tarps over their heads to protect them from the drizzly weather. Students who participated returned home around 7 a.m. the next morning.

Speakers from both “Covenant House” and “Family Promise,” two groups that help combat homelessness, attended the event as well and spoke about their organizations.

“It was definitely beneficial to have them at the event. They spoke about the different shelters available to homeless people and also ways for students to get involved with the organizations and help homeless people in general,” said sophomore Anna Blair, a member of the English class that created PV Provide.

In addition, David Joseph, a local resident who had attended PV as a teenager, spoke at the event about his own life story and how homelessness played a part in it.

The Sleep Out was sponsored by “Covenant House,” an organization that works to combat homelessness and help provide shelter for homeless youth across America.

The event not only opened students’ eyes as to what it is like to be homeless, but also raised money and awareness for the cause.
