PV senior reaches 1,000 points
Vasel becomes 5th boy in school history to reach milestone
Pascack Valley senior shooting guard Matt Vasel cemented himself in the annals of Pascack Valley boys basketball history, recording his 1000th career point during Tuesday’s 65-50 victory over Tenafly.
Vasel, who’s averaging 15.1 points per game and needed 23 points entering Tuesday’s contest to reach the milestone, wound up scoring exactly 23 points and recorded his 1000th after converting on a free-throw attempt.
The 23 points mark the third most Vasel has scored in a game this season, and his first 20+ point game since Jan. 24, when he scored 28 points.
Demonstrating his scoring knack early in his career, he also set PV’s school record for 3-point shots made in a season during his sophomore year, recording 83.
Having reached the milestone, Vasel joins John Blackgrove (2,237 points), Ron Greve (1,144 points), Michael Leighton (1,189 points) and Sean Liddy (1,009 points) as the only boys basketball players in PV history to record 1,000 points, and is likely to pass Liddy for fourth on the school’s all-time boys scoring list come the end of the season.
Jake Aferiat graduated in 2017.
