PV senior to premiere documentary about black culture
Kira Player, a senior at PV, has created an original documentary about black culture as her senior project. The documentary, called “Throw Some Shade,” will be premiering at PV in the auditorium at 7 p.m. tonight. Admission is free and there will be a discussion afterward about the film, led by Player.
Q: When did you first decide that you wanted to do a senior project?
A: “I have been thinking about doing a senior project since the end of my junior year. It got me thinking about the process, and as I got to my senior year, I finalized what I wanted to do.”
Q: How long have you worked on your documentary, “Throw Some Shade?”
A: “The senior project process started in the third marking period, and I spent all of my third marking period finalizing my topic, and then it took a month or so of getting together materials and research to finalize the project.”
Q: Can you give a brief summary of what “Throw Some Shade” is about?
A: “’Throw Some Shade’ is a documentary about the perception of black culture in America, and I personally wanted to find out why the only black person on TV I saw growing up was Raven Symone. I also wanted to know why black music appropriated into white culture and pop culture the way that it has.”
Q: What inspired you to pursue this project and create the documentary?
A: “It was really an exploration of my own questions growing up as black in a predominantly white community, and just the struggles that I had to go through while growing up. I was inspired by the effect of how society perceived black people and how that effected me.”
Q: Is there any additional information about “Throw Some Shade” that you would like to discuss?
A: “The documentary is really straight-forward in its mission. I’m not necessarily trying to inspire anybody, but I want other minority kids to understand that they aren’t the only ones to question who they are.”
Q: Are you planning to study film-making in college?
A: I am not planning to study film-making because I want to pursue acting in college. However, I am definitely interested in film-making and documentary-making, and I have taken classes in these areas at PV, such as Journalism, Film and Lit, and Video Production. These classes have helped me in my research and also helped me to understand how I can really put all my research together into the documentary.”
