PV sophomore educates school on Indian farmer suicide crisis

This past Wednesday, PV sophomore Chandni Shah held a Pascack Period Presentation about the humanitarian crisis of the climbing numbers of Indian and global farmer suicides.

Through the PV Human Rights League, Shah wanted to create awareness about this underrepresented, yet important issue.

“It is not just one place where this problem is occurring, but it is all around the world,” Shah said.

To her, it is important to create awareness about this issue, as many people do not know that this is happening in their global community.

Just by asking her peers in her history class, she found that no one had heard of the rise of farmer suicides in India, or the world in general, for that matter.

She is now working with a registered non-profit organization, Save Indian Farmers, which helps the widows of these farmers become self-reliant and independent. Save Indian Farmers also works on many proactive projects to tackle this issue from different aspects, whether it is through education or development.

Shah plans to host another Pascack period presentation during the start of next fall as well as host a walk for the school to participate in.

Shah is very passionate about this issue and continues to spread awareness about it. In fact, she has her own blog on the Save Indian Farmers website.
