PV students, faculty respond to Sandy Hook commercial
The Smoke Signal had Pascack Valley students and faculty members watch the Sandy Hook Commercial released on Sept. 28 by the Sandy Hook Promise to see their reactions to the video. The foundation is led by the parents of the victims who were killed in the elementary school shooting on Dec. 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut.
The commercial was created to promote the Sandy Hook Foundation and prevent gun violence before it occurs. According to the Sandy Hook Promise website, eight children die from gun violence every day in the United States, and in four out of five school shootings, at least one person had knowledge of the attack but failed to report it.
PV history teachers Ken Sarajian and Jonathan Rose question the purpose of the Sandy Hook commercial.
Juniors Ilmie Xhaferi and Emma Stankus interpret and talk about the lasting impact of the commercial.
PV Guidance counselor Frank Andrisani explains the prevalence of the commercial in today’s society.
PV students talk about their views regarding the video.

Hi,
Thank you so much for addressing this PSA in your school! If you ever want to have a conversation with me about this PSA, or about how to prevent violence and gun violence by learning the signs, please let me know. Also, I wanted to confirm that this PSA is targeting adults, not students, and is not used in our program training. The idea is to help parents understand the fear many students have today, and spark serious conversation and action – which includes learning the signs at sandyhookpromise.org (as the PSA call to action says) and to bring our no-cost violence prevention programs to your school/district.
Again, thank you for addressing this in your paper!
Sincerely,
Nicole Hockley
Managing Director, Sandy Hook Promise
