PVRG ready for 2018 season
Team led by four seniors
Head coach: Alison Petaccia
Last year’s record: 7-2
Key returnees: Melissa Ricciardi (Sr.), Maya Horowitz (Jr.), Hallie Wikfors (Jr.), Marissa McGrane (Sr.), Amanda Solda (Jr.), Jamie Rossig (Sr.), Amanda Goldstein (Sr.), Rachel Shakarjian (So.), Ashley Lowe (So.), Reese Driscoll (So.), Bridget Coyle (So.), Kate Ng (So.), Grayson Catherwood (So.)
Key losses: Olivia Lein, Devon Margulies
Key newcomers: Jolie Ballaff (Fr.), Isabella Monti (Fr.), Gabrielle Sandt (Fr.), Sophia Ring (Fr.), Charlotte Gershberg (Fr.)
Strengths of team: Just like last season, PVRG has a lot of depth in its lineup. The team also is experienced, with 5 seniors. Leading the way will once again be Ricciardi, who was second-team all-state in 2017. Ricciardi won all-around gold at the NJGL-A meet. Her strongest event is beam where she was No.1 in North Jersey last year with a score of 9.8. She tied for 10th at the individual state finals and was named a Gymnast to Watch by NJ.com prior to this season. Junior Maya Horowitz also competed in the all-around last season, one of the few North Jersey gymnasts to score higher than a 36.
Areas that need improvement: A year ago, PVRG’s weakest events were bars and vault. Pascack will need to improve in these events to consistently compete with the upper echelon teams in North Jersey.
Outlook: Like last season, Pascack Valley Regional will once again be at the top of heap in North Jersey gymnastics. A year ago, Pascack went neck-and-neck with Ridgewood and Holy Angels all season long. PVRG’s only two regular season losses came at the hands of Ridgewood and the Academy of Holy Angels. Pascack managed to edge out Ridgewood and AHA for the NJGL-A title, but finished second in the Bergen County Tournament to AHA, and placed third at the North 1 Sectionals behind AHA and Ridgewood. After missing out on the State Tournament last year, Pascack will look to return to Montgomery in 2018.
