Quarterback, wide receiver connection leads to big plays
PV fires on all cylinders in blowout win over Bergenfield
To say Colin Dedrick and Mike Pimpinella are dialed in would be an understatement.
All eight of Dedrick’s completions were caught by Pimpinella, including four touchdowns, in Pascack Valley’s win over Bergenfield by the score of 49-13 Saturday at Bergenfield High School.
“Mike does a great job,” said Dedrick, who was 8-for-14 for 217 yards on the day. “He’s always open.”
The senior duo connected for four touchdowns in the blowout win. The first, on the second play from scrimmage, went for 90 yards. This was only the beginning of the offensive domination.
“Colin hits the open man,” Pimpinella said. “He can throw it anywhere.”
The second TD pass occurred on the following drive, still in the early stages of the first quarter. After going to the ground game early in the drive, Dedrick capped off the drive by hitting Pimpinella for a 23-yard touchdown, extending the PV (5-0) lead to 14-0.
Halfway through the second quarter, Pimpinella crossed over the middle of the field, as we have seen so many times this season. After pulling down the reception, Pimpinella ran for a touchdown. The pass and the run combined for 38 yards, and put PV up 27-0.
Besides the big pass plays on offense, the PV run game was again consistent. With the return of senior running back Jake Giambona this week, the running game was a bit different. Giambona had previously missed the last two games with a shoulder injury.
“We told Giambona he was going to get 5-10 carries just to get his feet wet,” PV coach Craig Nielsen explained.
Senior running back Andrew Flores managed the bulk of the work, carrying the ball 22 times for 115 yards. But Giambona was able to punch in three touchdowns on goal line situations. He actually had less carries than Nielsen originally intended, only totaling eight carries for 60 yards.
Junior fullback Josh Tillis also recorded 74 yards on three carries. Tillis’ workload usually isn’t much, but in this contest, he made the most of his carries, averaging almost 25 yards per carry.
The defense was also able to shut down Bergenfield (2-3) and its highly praised senior quarterback Jovani Haskins. Haskins, a dual threat quarterback, only totaled 83 yards on the ground and in the air. Senior linebacker Joe Williams had another astounding game, particularly in stopping Haskins by batting down passes.
One of the state’s most highly sought-after college recruits, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Haskins projects as a tight end on the next level and has reportedly narrowed his college choice to Rutgers, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Miami.
“We went out there and stopped him,” Williams simply put it.
After this blowout win, the Indians expect a very different game next week.
They will take on Old Tappan (5-0).
“It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2,” Nielsen said, referring to The Bergen Record’s North Jersey public school rankings. “If I have to get them motivated, then there’s something wrong.”
This highly anticipated game should be very close and is important to both teams.
“It will be a battle for the whole game,” Dedrick said.
