Returning wrestlers contribute to Indians’ latest matches
PV’s 37-35 loss to Wall Township puts them at 7-5 on the year. Three of Wall’s four reigning district placers, Cole Meyer (106), Jacob Whitworth (152), and Rob Kanniard (160) all came out victorious. Meyer’s and Whitworth’s were win by forfeit while Kanniard won by technical fall. Kanniard is the state runner-up at his weight class.
Once plagued with injuries, the Indians’ roster has finally gotten itself healthy again. Senior Jake Averna, freshman Drew Petaccia, and senior Matt Beyer were the wrestlers missing significant time with injury.
PV’s 42-25 victory against Pascack Hills marked the fourth straight year they have beaten the Cowboys. After the first eight bouts, the Indians trailed 25-11. The ninth bout was 126, where Petaccia made his season debut and defeated Peter Torre by a 9-1 major decision. The turning point was Griffin Arsis’s 0:17 pin over Michael Frangos.
After Arsis’s bout, it was smooth sailing for PV. They scored 21 more points after the 132 bout to seal it.
“We’re finally healthy, for the most part,” coach Tom Gallione said. “Having Jake [Averna] back, having Drew [Petaccia] back, having Matt [Beyer] back, the majority of the guys are back and I’m happy.”
Beyer has missed the previous four dual meets and the Sam Cali Tournament with a lingering shoulder issue, but was awarded a win by forfeit. The Cowboys got their points off of the pins at the heavyweights as well as the the three lower weights. Averna returned to his first match since the Lakeland Tournament at 113. While he lost to Benny Bautista in a 9-2 decision, Gallione thought he wrestled great.
“Jake’s [Averna] only wrestled in four matches. That kid [Bautista] has wrestled in 18,” Gallione said. It’s a big difference. I don’t care if you’re a senior, four matches as opposed to 18 is a lot. Jake wrestled a real good match. I know he wasn’t pleased, but that’s what you want. He wants to get better, and he’s not happy with the loss. But looking at it from a standpoint of not wrestling, for 3-4 weeks, it’s a pretty good job.”
The Indians also faced Fair Lawn on Saturday, Jan. 19, and won by a score of 36-28. Below are the results in each bout from the past week.
