Season Recap: Boys soccer looks back
The Pascack Valley Boys Soccer team completed its 2015 season with a 12-6 record.
Looking back on the season, head coach Roy Nygren, highlighted one of the key games that the Indians won, which was the county tournament game against powerhouse Bergen Catholic. Bergen Catholic was seeded number one in the tournament, seventh best team in the state, and undefeated, but not for long. The Indians won in double overtime, 3-2, with a 22-yard free kick from junior Michael Lin.
“This was one of the best games of the year in the county, and the boys played with such courageousness. You’ve got to do a lot of right things, right plays in order to beat a team as good as them, and we did,” coach Nygren said.
Looking ahead, the team will be losing 3 starters, including captain Kyle McManus, Theo Morris, and Andrew Varteresian. McManus, a midfielder, was voted first team, all-league, along with fellow juniors Michael Lin and Ryan Miller. Morris was also awarded second team, all-league.
“While the conclusion to the season wasn’t what we wanted, I couldn’t have been prouder then the boys. They worked so hard, and continuously got better as the season went on,” Nygren said with a smile.
Nygren has “tremendous hope and confidence” looking into next season seeing that 8 of the starters are returning. The boys will look to the off season to improve on the field in order to produce another winning team next year.
This season was like no other Pascack Valley has seen for the boys soccer team in recent history. The tremendous amount of support that the team received from the community was uplifting and definitely made for a memorable season for the athletes on and off the field.
“I’d like to thank the PV community for all their support throughout the year, the boys appreciated support from the stands, hallways, and even throughout our town,” Nygren said.
