Season Recap: Bright future for junior XC runners
The 2015 cross-country season has finally come to an end. The season was filled with ups (like the success of junior phenomenon Ashley Evans) and downs (like the loss of junior Jeff Roberts to injury) but in the end, it was a great year for everyone.
Former captain Evan Jones is going to miss Pascack Valley cross country the most, as he was the heart and soul of the team this year. He always brought an upbeat and fun attitude coupled with a hardworking atmosphere for his fellow runners on the XC team.
“I’m going to miss seeing my teammates everyday and watching everyone improve throughout the season,” Jones said.
Jones was also a role model to the rest of his team.
“Evan was a good leader and a good captain. He made me feel comfortable and welcome as an incoming freshman new to cross country,” freshman John DeMartini explained.
And of course there were the funniest moments of the year, whether it be just joking around with head coach Russ Grier, or playing Frisbee with the team. “The funniest moment would have to be Grier’s annual cross country awards given out at the end of the season brunch” Jones said.
Last but not least, there was all the success both girls’ and boys’ varsity teams had this year. The boys’ best meet was the county meet in which Evan Jones set his personal record, and John Coyle and John McGrath both stepped up in a big way.
Additionally, the girls’ best meet was the counties as well. Junior Ashley Evans, sophomore Marlo Guastella and sophomore Megan Thorn all came in the top 20, which propelled the team to qualify for the Bergen County Meet of Champions.
Finally, looking ahead to next year, the team captains of the 2016 season will be: Boys: Jeff Roberts, Andrew Merli, and John Coyle, and for Girls: Ashley Evans and Nikki Criscuolo.
The 2015 season has ended, but the team captains Evan Jones, Zak Terzini, Nicole Mizzoni, and Olivia Ward will all be truly missed, and never forgotten.
Robert Saul graduated in 2019.
