Seniors to be inducted in virtual National Honor Society ceremony
After the original National Honor Society induction ceremony date scheduled for April 15 had passed, Valerie Santo talked with the administration, club officers, and Pascack Hills NHS advisor Peggy White before deciding to move the event online for seniors.
Due to the coronavirus, the ceremony will now be held on Zoom on Thursday at 7:15 p.m., and all family members can tune in.
“I had gotten a little feedback from some of the senior parents just wondering what the plan would be,” Santo said, the NHS advisor and English teacher. “Putting things off seemed unfair. I thought that this would be the best way to recognize those seniors. The intentions were to honor and regard everybody for their hard work.”
Santo said that she plans to make the best of the circumstances, including having virtual programs in place of the paper copies usually handed out during the ceremony.
“The ceremony has become like a well-oiled machine, but it’s going to be different doing it virtually,” Santo said. “We’re not going to have a podium like we normally would or mood music playing. We’re just going to be working off of a slightly abridged version of that induction script. Everyone’s going to have particular things to read and say. I just don’t know how it’s actually going to look.”
Santo said there is no set date for junior applicants to find out if they have got into NHS.
“[The coronavirus] has delayed the normal process of things, but [the juniors] will be finding out when I get the emails done,” Santo said.
NHS President and senior Isabella Tjan said many events were being organized before the coronavirus, including a cleanup of Sapienza Gardens behind the school.
“I am disappointed that we didn’t get to have a full year where the society could do a bunch of projects,” Tjan said. “[Even though the year was] cut short, I think that this year’s NHS members were so special because all of the members truly wanted to be there. They weren’t just doing it for recognition or the title.”
