While I believe the Mascot Selection Committee and those in charge of it had good intentions in terms of community involvement, I believe the ball was dropped when it came to transparency and communication with the vast majority of the student body. Those who were not part of the committee were essentially kept out of the loop, and quite frankly I see no good reason for the “top secret” mentality that the committee decided to take on. It was an uphill battle for the average student to have his or her voice heard, to the point where most simply opted to watch the process play out from the sidelines. The end result will be that a large portion of the student body will not identify themselves with whichever of the three finalists is ultimately selected.
