Spring sports preview: Boys and girls track and field
Head coach (years at the helm): Al Cann (22 years)
Key returnees from last year (with grade): AJ Hall (Sr.), Kate Muccio (Sr.), Paul Yoo (Sr.), Ben Mandel (Sr.), Danny Collis (Sr.), Evan Jones (Jr.), Joe Figueroa (Jr.), Abby and Chelsea Lee (Jr.), Jeff Roberts (Sr.), Ashley Evans (So.), Nikki Criscuolo, (So.).
Key losses: Nicole Miller, Rachel Kearney, Alice Urbiel, Bari Weinstein, Erin Connolly, Gianna Coccozo, Jaleel Felton.
Key newcomers: Marlo Guastella (Fr. Distance), Nolan Spillane (Fr. Distance), Casey Lewis (Fr. Distance), and Nathan Mullaney (Fr. Sprints).
Strengths of team: There are a lot of students who have joined the team this year; strong numbers in the throws, along with a lot of hard working kids.
Areas that need improvement: It’s never easy to replace a stud like Felton, but this is a strong team. The team’s main focuses are consistency and dedication.
Coach’s comment: “We’re young, but if we get good performances from our rookies, we can have a very good season. I think we’ll surprise those who are underestimating us.”
Outlook: Last year, the record was around 500 for both the girls and boys spring track teams. The season was off to a bumpy start, but there were some outstanding individual performances, which highlighted the entire season for the coaches. Two seniors ended up making it to state champs – Felton for the 400 meter, and Nicole Miller for the high jump. This year, Cann and Murtaugh are looking to match last year’s season’s record, but are hoping to send more students to the state championships again.
Jaimie Smith graduated in 2016.
