Spring Sports Preview: boys lacrosse

The team will play Indian Hills on Wednesday

Head coach: Mr. Craig Buckley (6th season)

Last year’s record: 6-10

Key returnees: Brian Horvath (Sr. ), Steve Farrell (Sr.-), Zach Beja (Sr.-Attack), Rocco Swatek (Sr.-Defense), Brandon Vallario (Sr.), Chris Miele (Sr.), Jimmy Spillane (Jr.), Mike Soravilla (Jr.), Jake Giambona (Jr.), Matt Hausch (Sr.), Kyle Arden (Sr.).

Key losses: John DeCottiis and Jake Sirico.

Key newcomers: Josh Tillis (So.), Tommy Uhl (So.), Connor Kimball (So.).

Strengths of team: The team lost only four players from a year ago with many of the returning players experiencing varsity for the first time.  I believe, with the experience gained a year ago, the team could very well have a successful season. The team’s strength will be on defense. With a majority of the defensive starters returning from a year ago, expect a solid outing from defense each game.

Coach’s comment: On Defense, our team is lead by Rocco Swatek, who earned 1st team all-league and 3rd team all-county a year ago. He is one of our captains and will be our leader on defense.  We are expecting a strong defensive unit with senior Kyle Arden, junior Jacob Wrede and sophomore Tommy Uhl. Steve Farrell, a senior defensive midfielder, earned 3rd team all-county a year ago, and we expect him to have a strong season. Senior goalie Brandon Vallario was a first year varsity starter a year ago. With a year of experience, we believe Brandon will have an outstanding senior season.

At midfield, senior captain Brian Horvath, who has been a three-year player on the varsity level, will lead us.
We are expecting a strong midfield of players who have shown nice development in the pre-season.  We will look for senior Joey Oh, juniors Jake Giambona, Jimmy Spillane, Zak Terzini and Joe Williams, as well as sophomore Josh Tillis all to contribute offensively.

At attack, three-year starter Zach Beja, who netted 27 Goals and dished out 23 assists for 50 points last spring, leads us. Senior Chris Miele, who converted to attack from Midfield, will be looked upon to pick up where he left off a year ago. Chris netted 20 goals and 10 assists for 30 points. Junior Mike Soravilla and sophomore Conor Kimball will also be counted on as scoring threats.”

Outlook: Experience will play greatly into the hands of the Indians. With the majority of the team being comprised of seniors this season, they will surely act as mentors to the younger players. Defense will be key, with many of the returning seniors playing defense. Youth will also help the team, as when the seniors graduate, the sophomores and juniors will fill the void.
