Spring sports preview: Boys Lacrosse
Head Coach: Craig Buckley (7th season)
Last year’s record: 14-4, division champions
Key returnees: Jimmy Spillane (Sr., Att/Mid), Mike Soravilla (Sr., Att), Joe Williams (Sr., Mid), Conor Kimball (Jr., Att/Mid), Tommy Uhl (Jr., Def), James Setola (Sr., G), Cooper Frey (Sr., Def)
Key losses: Chris Miele (Att), Zach Beja (Att), Brian Horvath, Steve Farrell (Mid), Rocco Swatek (Def), Brandon Vallario (G)
Key newcomers: Matt Haag (So., Def), Jack Smolen (Sr., Mid), Nick Stevens (Sr., Att), Jacob Wrede (Sr., Def), Sean Tocci (Jr., Mid), Josh Tillis (Jr.-Mid), Luke Ciocca (Jr., Mid)
Strengths of team: Defense. “After watching in the preseason, the defense has been strong, and the offense can take some time to start to click,” Buckley said. “But we have been sound defensively.”
Areas that need improvement: Ability to finish. “We are moving the ball well and getting good shots, but they just aren’t falling for us,” he said. “We tell them to keep firing and eventually shots will go in.”
Outlook: A similar season to last year is more than possible for the Indians who have a lot of returnees, as well as newcomers that can fill the void left by the seniors that graduated. While there is no prolific scorer evident this season, there are a lot of young players with potential that can make an immediate impact.
Coach’s comment: “I think we can be successful again this year, the new guys have some great potential that are coming up and we played some pretty good competition and did well, especially in Florida,” said Buckley. “We did lose some guys, but the guys that are coming up know the game they just have to acclimate themselves to varsity, but the skill level and talent is there.”
Jake Aferiat graduated in 2017.
