Spring Sports Preview: Boys Tennis
Head Coach: Ken DelSanto (2nd season)
Last year’s record: 5-15
Key returnees: Austin Davis (Sr.), Jeremy Collier (Sr.), Alex Corring (Sr.)
Key loss: Alex Robinson
Key newcomers: Evan Demarest (Fr.), Noah Schwartz (So.), Jonathan Antebi (Sr.), Jeremy Lesserson (So.)
Strengths of team: Good, solid group of players, as well as good attitude. “There’s no one that’s egotistical, there’s no one that thinks they’re better than everybody else. Everybody comes together as a team nicely,” DelSanto said.
Areas that need improvement: Getting the younger players experience. There are some young guys that need to step up, and therefore DelSanto has stressed that this is a big season to get his younger guys a first glance at the competition.
Outlook: PV brings an interesting group of seniors including returnees Davis, Collier, and Corring and slightly less varsity-experienced seniors in Antebi and Ian Choi. According to DelSanto, the three returning seniors will slot into the same role they were last season as the latter two seniors will likely be slotted in for some doubles matches. He also sees sophomores Schwartz and Lesserson slotting in at doubles matches. The loss of 2016 2nd singles player Alex Robinson hurts, but Demarest expects to fill that void.
Coach’s Comment: “I think we’ve got a good group of kids. There’s positivity and there’s a good attitude between everybody. With some of the newcomers, it will be a year that those guys are going to get experience. It’s an important aspect because once you get the younger guys experience, now in the next couple years they’ve had that experience and know how the whole Varsity tennis program works,” DelSanto said. “I’m excited to see some of the seniors that I’ve had now for three or four years in the program. I’m excited to see what they can do in their senior year.”
