Spring Sports Preview: Softball
Head Coach: Lauren Bacsik (2nd season)
Last Year’s Record: 10-13
Key Losses: Ashley Lagrosa (2B), Nikki Dehn (1B), Christine Franklin (OF), Alex Pleasic (P)
Key Returners: Gayle Pinchot (Sr., C), Nicole Franklin (Jr., 3B), Izabella Bussanich (Jr., SS), Jackie Dehn (Jr. 2B), Erin Flanagan (Jr. CF), Cara McMahon (So. P), Julia Spadafino (So. P/OF), Madison Gallo (So. C).
Key newcomers: Gabby LoPiccolo (Jr., 1B), Julianna Dunne (So., 1B), Allison Belgiovine (Fr., OF), Ashley Mckenna (Fr., OF), Bailey Mcnamara (Fr., 2B).
Strengths: Returning a lot of key players. Last season a lot of these players were first year starters and gained a lot of experience in the process. McMahon and Spadafino were both very young pitchers as freshmen and now returning as sophomores, have gained much needed experience and have improved. “I think last year a lot of those girls were first year starts, so this year they will have a lot more experience under their belt,” Bacsik said.
Areas that need improvement: Depth. According to Bacsik, they have very few areas of improvement, however, they are looking for some underclassmen players to step up to play first base and one outfield position.
Outlook: Last season was Pascack Valley’s first under Bacsik and the Indians managed to finish just below .500. Now, having returned many starters and adding the freshmen and newcomers to the mix, PV aims to contend in its division and gain another berth in the sectional tournament.
Coach’s Comment: “I think a lot of people will underestimate us because we are still pretty young. We only have one starting senior as of now. I think we are a lot better this year than last year because we have more experience,” Bacsik said.
